What would you do if your son were about to be drafted into war?
On September 21, 2022, mandatory conscription was announced in Russia. Within hours, families had to decide:
Obey.
Hide.
Or run.
The New Exodus is a gripping historical novel based on the true story of two Russian families who chose to flee rather than send their sons to fight in the war against Ukraine.
With only days to act, they left behind their homes, careers, community, and security in Saint Petersburg — and stepped into the unknown.
They had almost no money.
No work.
No destination.
Only one of the nine spoke English.
Yet they traveled more than 20,000 miles across the globe — from Russia to Istanbul, stranded there for two months… to Mexico, stranded again… never knowing what the next day would bring.
But this is not just a story of escape.
It is a story of inner transformation.
What You’ll Experience as a Reader
✔ A real-time race against the clock as families struggle to cross borders before they close
✔ The psychological weight of propaganda, fear, and moral decision-making
✔ The raw vulnerability of losing everything familiar
✔ Moments of divine providence that defy explanation
✔ The inner exodus that happens when everything external collapses
This novel reads like a thriller — full of tension, narrow escapes, and unexpected twists — yet unfolds into something far deeper.
These families lose hope and find it again.
They taste the bitterness of despair and learn to soar above it.
They become homeless and penniless — yet discover a kind of freedom they never knew before.
They encounter angels and demons.
They see signs.
They learn to trust God one moment at a time.
They thought they were escaping a war.
They discovered they were walking through an exodus of the soul.
Why This Book Stays With You
This story invites you to ask:
- What is freedom worth?
- How much are you willing to lose to protect your conscience?
- What happens when you surrender control completely?
- Where is God when everything falls apart?
It is a modern exodus. A resurrection story. A spiritual odyssey disguised as a geopolitical escape.

Ironically, reading this story of displaced people wondering far from home, facing incredibly insecure circumstances, gave me a feeling of security and home. The story seemed to illustrate the idea that even when we are without a job, home, country, or clear identity, we are not alone. This book has a simple, conversational style and is easy to read, yet there are some beautiful metaphors and sophisticated themes. Every time I opened the book, I felt like I entered a golden world because of the love the people in the story had for each other. Even though I've never immigrated to another country, I found the challenges and insights of the characters very relevant to my own life. The story also sensitized me to the plight of immigrants and the stark vulnerability of their situation.
This was edge of your seat suspense all the way through. Well developed characters draw you in to this true story. I learned a lot as well.
With Russia being a thinly veiled dictatorship with smothering censorship outsiders rarely get glimpse into the feelings of the populace. The New Exodus gives us a deep insight into the common folk and how they really feel about their oppressive government. This true story could not have been made up and was every bit a nail biter as top ranked fiction. I am fascinated by the constant theme of faith in the Almighty that resonates through the book, especially from a family whose country disavows organized religion. The reader lives through the pits and valleys of a Russian family, convictions, and second thoughts, as they journey from one place to another. Informative, enjoyable and reinforcement that no hill is to high.
Uhh, as someone who witnessed the terrors or this war second hand, I can attest, this book is brutally touching. I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who has direct ptsd from that war but it’s very touching.
In my opinion, this book is based on the true story of two Russian families who fled Russia on September 21, 2022, to avoid mandatory conscription and not participate in the war with Ukraine. They did not want their 20-year-old sons to kill Ukrainians or listen to constant propaganda. They escaped from Russia just in time. It is full of revelations and ordinary miracles, all based on a true story.
